Whale Sharks of Saleh Bay

November 12, 2020 · Saleh Bay, Sumbawa, Indonesia

Saleh Bay in Sumbawa is home to a colony of juvenile whale sharks. Every morning at sunrise, when fishermen lift their nets, these young giants come close to the surface to catch whatever small fish and shrimps foo off their nets.

Due to the gain of popularity with tourists, some fishermen now pump water with some fish scales and shrimps at the surface to feed the whale sharks so they stick around a bit longer for the tourists... Something to monitor closely. For now, only juveniles are seen in the area, this means that, once they reach their adult size, they move on and keep their natural migrating behavior.
